The emissions currently produced by the UK are dwarfed by China and India, so the pessimist might ask, why bother targeting Net Zero if we are only a drop in the bucket of a worldwide problem? The optimist’s answer: if a developed nation can reach Net Zero without sacrificing economic growth, this could provide a blueprint for other nations to follow. But reaching Net Zero by 2050 will be no easy task, requiring fundamental changes to almost every element of society.
